At the Jackie Stevenson Dinner, we recognize three of our amazing volunteers with the Jackie Awards. Here’s information on each Jackie Award category:
The Jackie Stevenson Award – for a consummate volunteer. This award is named for one of CD3’s longest-serving and most well-known volunteers. Jackie Stevenson volunteered for 60 years. The teenaged Jackie helped thenEugene McCarthy campaign. She was a founder of the DFL Feminist Caucus, served as a national delegate and a member of the Democratic National Committee. she volunteered at all levels, including CD3 and her senate District. People across the state have “Jackie stories.” When she passed away in 2012 at the age of 77, she was working on the DFL Women’s Hall of Fame, the DFL Senior Caucus and the CD3 congressional Campaign.
The Sen. Linda Scheid Award for a local legislator who works hard for everyone. Linda Scheid serve in the Minnesota legislature beginning in the House from 197 through 1991. She held a seat in the Senate from 1999 until her death in 2011. Redistricting changed the senate district numbers from 45 to 47 and 46, but nothing changed what one admirer called “her unimpeachable sense of justice.” She began her journey of service in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, and later went to law school. When she didn’t win elections, she ran again — to serve. Sen. Schied passed away in June of 2011.
The Rick Nelson Award – for someone who “makes the trains run on time.” Rick Nelson “was fair with everybody,” said his wife, Kathy. An attorney with a deep voice, Rich was a popular chair of conventions, including the 2006 DFL convention, where he won the cheers of the delegates when he declared the men’s restrooms on one floor were now women’s restrooms. Problem solved. Rick served as the long time Associate Chair of CD3. His knowledge of the DFL constitution, his service on the DFL personnel committee, his willingness to work behind the scenes for the betterment of the DFL made him an institution in the party. We lost Rick in March of 2009.
